More Good News

Boycott Divest Sanction not stopping collaboration between Israeli and Canadian universities, ambassador says
"As protests against Israel have grown in the wake of ongoing conflict in Gaza, Rafael Barak, the Israeli ambassador to Canada, said he is pleased by the way local authorities have handled the sometimes violent escalation of hostilities between protest groups.

Meanwhile, BDS movements — passed by several student groups in recent years, including at three universities in Toronto — seem to be having little impact, he said.

“There is almost no Canadian or Israeli university that doesn’t have any co-operation at all,” Mr. Barak said after a speech delivered at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy on Wednesday."
[---]
"Only a small percentage of university student groups have voted in favour of sanctions — and these motions tend to pass with the encouragement of a small but vocal group of activists. They have been condemned by some as being outright anti-Semitic for their focus on human rights abuses in Israel while ignoring myriad problems in other countries in the region."
This must have certain academics' knickers in a knot.

You Say That...

...as if it's a bad thing:

Canadian govt complicit in Israeli war crimes
"In the midst of international condemnation of Israel’s attacks on civilians in Gaza, Canada’s ambassador to the UN issued a statement last week unequivocally supporting Israel’s “right to defend itself” and maintaining that Hamas was a “terrorist organization,” laying blame for civilian deaths firmly at the Palestinian group’s feet.

On Wednesday this week, Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper reiterated this stance after the Israeli bombing of a UN school in Gaza that killed at least 17 displaced Palestinians who were sheltering there, saying, “We hold the terrorist organization Hamas responsible for this. They have initiated and continue this conflict and continue to seek the destruction of the state of Israel.""
[---]
"While Harper’s support for right wing Israeli politicians is in step with his support base, a large component of whom are evangelical Christians fundamentally opposed to a two-state solution, it’s becoming an issue in his growing unpopularity with Canadian voters."
The author even manages to get an anti-Christian slur in there, and he manages to put in a plug for all the right (read leftist) people: Judy Rebick, Rabble, KAIROS, the UN Security Council, Margaret Atwood, Tubby-er-Libby Davies. (Heavy sigh.)

This Is Rich!

UPDATE

 ==============Original Starts Here==============
Hope among the ruins: Gaza looks to post-war aid to rebuild "This time, Mohammed Mustafa said, Palestinians hope future donors will make good on aid pledges. In 2009, only a fraction of the nearly $5 billion in funds promised at an international conference after a three-week war between Israel and Gaza's ruling Hamas actually arrived in the battered enclave.

"Once a ceasefire is reached, we will have to tackle the immediate problem of rehousing those who lost their homes," Mustafa told Reuters. "According to our estimates, they may number 400,000 people."

I sure hope not one dime of Canadian money goes to that project, or if it does, it's contingent upon Hamas leaders being arrested and brought to justice. Won't happen of course.

The Middle East - Yawn

The Deaths Of Civilians In Gaza Must End, And Only The UN Can Do It!!!
"While the UN won't discuss the rocket caches and the Hamas laid booby traps in supposedly neutral UN facilities. mosques and civilian homes or Hamas using civilians as human shields, there is one thing the UN and of course, the media, weighed in on quite extensively...civilian casualties in Gaza. The latest instance was the shelling of a UN school in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza yesterday...which of course, the UN is blaming on Israel. It was being used as a shelter for civilians whom had evacuated elsewhere. At least 16 people were killed and some 100 wounded.

This occurred during a humanitarian truce which as usual, only Israel observed."

At UN, Canada Blames Hamas for Gaza Casualties
"Canada used a chance to speak at the United Nations to issue a strong defence of Israel in the Israeli-Hamas conflict and blamed militants in the Gaza Strip for a death toll that has now climbed above 600.

“The indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza on Israel are terrorist acts, for which there can be no justification,” Guillermo Rishchynski, Canada’s representative to the UN, said in a debate before the Security Council.

Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, has “sought to deliberately put civilians, from both sides, in mortal danger. We mourn the resulting death and suffering,” Rishchynski said during Canada’s turn in a day of national statements on the Middle East crisis.

“The Israel Defense Forces have continued to demonstrate a commitment to minimize civilian casualties in response to the relentless rocket attacks,” he added. Rishchynski’s comments were in contrast to remarks by a number of countries that expressed dire concerns about the mounting civilian casualties from Israel’s offensive in Gaza and pressed Israel to do more to lessen the carnage."

Yay, Canada!

Dumb Question

Who Should Broker a Gaza Cease-Fire?

Why not just let Israel get the job done, then there will be the cease fire of all cease fires? But I guess that would be disproportionate. /sarc

Barbarians

Thursday, November 15, 2012

From The...

..."Be Careful What You Ask For - You Might Get It" file, this one is looking pretty serious (Ed. Emphasis mine throughout, unless otherwise indicated.).

First there's the thinly veiled pro-Hamas article from the CBC:
"The fighting, which began Wednesday when Israel assassinated Hamas' military chief, ..."
Uh. No. It started at least three days earlier when Hamas began launching 130+ rockets ito Israel.
"Most Gazans remained in their homes, following developments on Hamas-run TV and local radio stations. Many also provided updates on their Facebook and Twitter accounts, providing news about airstrikes and rocket launches."
[---]
""My little 4-year-old boy keeps asking me to pray with him every 10 minutes, saying, 'Mama. Let's pray together to Allah in order to be safe," ' one woman, Ghadeer Ahmad, wrote on her Facebook account."
Oh. The poor impoverished Gazans. They have to cope, using Facebook and Twitter accounts, which of course don't require computers and internet access accounts. No. They are too poor and deprived for that.
"While streets were quiet, bakeries and groceries remained open. No food shortages were reported, and electricity, which suffers frequent outages even during normal times, remained sporadic.  Many families keep home generators to maintain power.  (And I'll bet you they are told it's Israel's fault, but if the Israelis were in charge of that. Problem solved.)

"I am trying to calm my children when they hear the sound of explosions," said Zainab Nimr, a 33-year-old mother of three. (Hmmmm. Israeli mothers are not doing the same thing, I suppose.) "We have enough food and water for four days, so I asked my husband to go out and get extra supplies. No one knows when this will end."" (She got that right. She might want to bring that up with Hamas.)
[---]
"We want to kill in the name of God," chanted mourners as angry gunmen fired automatic weapons into the air. Hundreds of people raised their index fingers in the air, chanting, "God is great." (By God, if that doesn't remind me of Iraq under Saddam Hussein. People saying what they expect the goons want to hear.)
[---]
"This crime will not weaken us. It will make us stronger and more determined to continue the path of jihad and resistance," Hamas lawmaker Mushir al-Masri said in a eulogy. 'The enemy opened the battle and shall bear the consequences.'" (Uh. huh.)
Of course, missing completely from the CBC's story is an Israeli viewpoint on the barrage of rockets that landed in Israel in the days preceding the Israeli initiative.

But, this does look like war:
"Israeli officials said Wednesday that a ground invasion was a strong possibility in the coming days if Hamas didn't rein in the rocket fire. Mid-morning Thursday, there was no sign such an invasion might be beginning. But the Israeli military was cleared to call up special reserve units — a sign the operation might broaden."
But, I have to give CBC some credit. They do mention Iranian connections:
"The military said it destroyed dozens of the militants' most potent rockets -- the Iranian-made Fajr, which is capable of striking Israel's Tel Aviv heartland — as well as shorter-range rockets. In all, the military estimated Hamas had 10,000 rockets and mortars in its arsenal before the military operation began."
And they also cite Hamas' brutal history:
"Hamas, formed a quarter of a century ago as a resistance movement committed to Israel's destruction, has killed hundreds of Israelis over the years."
Meanwhile, Down Under, there's an editorial that states what CBC appears afraid to mention:
"HAMAS has only itself to blame for the latest Israeli military strikes in Gaza and the sooner the international community accepts this - rather than indulging in another round of knee-jerk condemnation of the Jewish state as an aggressor - the sooner an element of reality will return to Middle East peace efforts. (Emphasis in the original.)

While calls for caution and restraint are justified, Hamas's culpability is clear. Israel has an unequivocal duty to protect the lives of its citizens against deadly attacks by a terrorist organisation that steadfastly refuses to even acknowledge its right to exist. Since last weekend more than 120 lethal rockets - many supplied by Iran and Syria - have been fired from Gaza, indiscriminately targeting population centres in Israel. That's more than 800 fired by Hamas and associated terrorist groups such as Islamic Jihad this year, and 8000 since Israel withdrew from Gaza in a significant act of goodwill and in a gesture towards peace in 2005. At any time, a million Israelis are within range of the rockets and they have less than a minute to find shelter."

You Go Israel!!

Israeli Strike in Gaza Kills the Military Leader of Hamas
"The Israeli military said it had ordered the airstrikes as part of a response to days of rocket fire launched from Gaza into Israeli territory.

Mr. Jabari’s death signaled a further escalation in the renewed hostility between Israel and Hamas, the militant organization regarded by Israel as a terrorist group sworn to Israel’s destruction. [Ya think!] The Israeli attacks could also further complicate Israel’s fragile relations with Egypt, where the new government has established closer ties with Hamas and had been acting as a mediator to restore calm between Israel and Gaza-based militant groups."
Now wouldn't that be interesting. It took more than 50 years to be rid of the Arab Nationalists flavour of dictatorship, and Israel survived it all. I suspect it won't be nearly as long before the old goats aka Islamists are done for.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Canadian and Irish idiots en route to break the Gaza blockade thwarted by IDF. Poor poor Pals. They won't be able to receive the humanitarian aid that WASN'T ON BOARD!
"Navy forces boarded two vessels attempting to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip on Friday and towed them to the Ashdod Port in Israel. All 27 pro-Palestinian activists onboard the ships will be transferred over to the police and Immigration Authority and later expected to be expelled from the country.

IDF officials remarked that they did not find any weapons or humanitarian aid onboard the ship. The troops boarded the vessels without any resistance and no one was hurt, the military said."
Good job, IDF. I hope the Canadian idiot gets a re-education while he's camped out over there, but I won't hold my breath. Min you, he's probably a lot warmer than the idiots camped out in the Occupy Whatever rape and drug overdosing fests.

...all around them, I think this is hilarious:

AL holds emergency meeting on Israeli attack on Gaza
"The Arab League (AL) started an urgent meeting at the level of permanent delegates on Sunday to discuss measures aimed at stopping Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip."
But silly me. Of course they'll say and do just that. Even though a few of their cronies will be missing at the table, that's all they know how to do.

Is Gaza Next?

Facebook page urges Gazans to topple Hamas government
"Observers in Gaza and the West Bank said they were unsure whether the Facebook call would be able to mobilize huge numbers of protesters.

They said Gazans were afraid of Hamas' security apparatus, which has acted harshly against critics.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday said Hamas authorities in Gaza quashed a solidarity demonstration with Egypt last week. The international watchdog said police arbitrarily arrested six women and threatened to arrest another 20 people as soon as they arrived at the Park of the Unknown Soldier in Gaza City.

HRW said Abbas' Palestinian Authority police also used violence against peaceful demonstrators in the central West Bank city of Ramallah last week, by punching, kicking and detaining participants, as well as at least two journalists and a HRW research assistant."

Nonie Darwish (Old Post Previously Unpublished)

Nonie Darwish on the Gaza Prison Camp
"Today the Gaza Strip, now under the control of Hamas, has become the Gaza prison camp for 1.5 million Palestinians and continues to serve as the launching pad for attacks against Israeli citizens.

This is the legacy of the Arab world's Palestinian refugee policy, started 60 years ago, when the Arab League implemented special laws regarding Palestinians that all Arab countries had to abide by. Arab countries could not absorb Palestinians. Even if a Palestinian married a citizen of an Arab country, that Palestinian could not become a citizen of his or her spouse's country. A Palestinian can be born, live and die in an Arab country, but never gain its citizenship. Even now I receive e-mails from Palestinians telling me they cannot have a Syrian passport, for example, and must remain Palestinian even though they have never set foot in the West Bank or Gaza. Forcing the Palestinian identity on them is designed to perpetuate the Palestinian refugee status. Palestinians have been used and abused by Arab nations, and by Palestinian terrorists, for the purpose of destroying Israel."
