Famous Egyptian writer says Hamas is “the real enemy,” not Israel

"Egyptian writer and playwright Ali Salem, who has a record of peaceful statements regarding Israel, said Israel is Egypt’s “friend” and Hamas is “the real enemy.”

It is not in Israel’s interest for Egypt to suffer from a lack of security, Salem said on Al-Arabiya TV in an interview Wednesday, the Egyptian El-Watan website reported.

The intellectual said Hamas and Islamic State present the most serious threat to Egypt.

Salem has visited Israel and called for the normalization of relations, drawing strong reactions from critics.

The real enemy is also poverty, ignorance, and disease, he said, adding, “Egypt will defeat terrorism no matter how long it takes.”"

According to press statements by religious authorities on Wednesday, Egypt has the highest number of atheists in the Arab World, amounting to 866.

"This contentious figure was cited by Ibrahim Negm, advisor to Egypt’s Grand Mufti, based on an international survey, conducted by independent polling and survey group "Red C" in 2014.

Negm added that the country has witnessed a marked increase in atheism over the past four years, with a number of Egypt-based groups appearing online, including, “Atheists Without Borders,” “The Atheist Brotherhood,” and “Atheists Against Religions.”

An Egyptian atheist, “X,” whose name is being withheld due to security concerns, commented: “I trust that the number of atheists in Egypt far exceeds 866; at least ten times, if not a hundred times this number, maybe even more … There are likely more than 866 atheists just in downtown Cairo right now … I don’t know how they arrived at this figure. I haven’t heard of such statistics, or a survey being conducted about atheism before today.”

“Given the religiosity and conservatism of Egyptian society, nearly all atheists keep a low profile and do not publicly announce their atheism. So, even if there were a survey or census conducted, many atheists would not disclose their non-belief in religion. It’s a matter of ensuring one’s physical and psychological security.”"

They are also the unhappiest.

Egypt ranks as one of unhappiest countries in the world, says poll

"Out of the 143 countries surveyed for levels of happiness and positive emotions, Egypt fell toward the bottom of the list at 123.

The poll showed that countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are among the lowest in the world when it comes to expressing positive emotions, with an average score of 59. Egypt scored 58 in that list, which was topped by Paraguay and many other Latin American countries that scored 89.

With the exception of Saudi Arabia, all MENA countries scored far below the global mean for happiness. However, the report noted that the data for many Gulf countries had not yet been finalized.

Some of the other saddest countries in the world included Sudan (47), Tunisia (52), Turkey (54) and Afghanistan (55).

“People in the MENA region not only report the lowest positive emotions in the world — they are also reporting the highest negative emotions in the world. In fact, last year, the MENA region represented four of the top five countries in the world for negative emotions — including Iran, which was, interestingly enough, in the news for jailing four young people for making a video about happiness,” the report said."

Two days ago, I took part in a conference attended by not only Azhar's highest authorities but also the Coptic Pope, intellectuals and politicians. The subject was "freedom of choice" and the great gift that this freedom represents. The right to choose a particular faith, whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim, is an inherent part of our religion.

SPIEGEL: Does this mean Muslims should take action against those who falsely interpret their religion?

Sisi: Of course, because these extremists not only insult Islam, they also offend the image of God, the all-mighty. Their false beliefs lead many people to ask themselves: What kind of a religion is this Islam?"

Sisi: They both share the same ideology. But the Muslim Brotherhood is the origin of all of it. All these other extremists emanated from them."

At the Coptic Cathedral, he urged Egyptians not to define themselves by their religion, be it Christian or Muslim, but by the fact that they are Egyptians--a rejection of Islamism, which defines national identity in purely religious terms.

To the world, he was saying that Islam as it is being taught and practiced by its leading religious scholars has given birth to a globally destructive ideology which is now threatening us all.

Moreover, he wants to launch a movement within Islam to save the religion from itself, that is, before it tears itself apart completely and the rest of the world destroys it in self-defense."

Again, even more than Mubarak, who loathed them too, al-Sisi sees the MB, Hamas and their Islamist allies as threats to Egypt as well as Israel. Likewise, he sees Iran—with whom Morsi sought a rapprochement—as Egypt's greatest strategic adversary in the region.

As a result, Egypt is now in an informal alliance with Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to confront Iran. That alliance is compromised, however, by recent moves from Egypt's Gulf partners to mend fences with Iran as a result of their feeling exposed by Washington's alarming pivot toward Tehran at the expense of its traditional Sunni clients."
