Global Warming /sarc

A weather disturbance may bring a significant snowfall to Southern Saskatchewan tonight through Tuesday.

"A low pressure system over Western Montana this morning is forecast to track eastward and strengthen somewhat today and tonight, then push slowly across North Dakota Tuesday and Wednesday. An area of rain and snow has already formed over Southern Alberta and Northern Idaho on the north and west sides of the system. This scenario will continue as the system pushes eastward, with snow expected to track into West-Central Saskatchewan tonight and continue eastward on Tuesday. Meanwhile as the system strengthens on Tuesday, snow will develop in southeastern areas Tuesday morning and then intensify during the day.

Southwestern regions should miss the brunt of the snow, however there may be patchy freezing rain overnight. The potential still exists for 10 to 15 cm of snow in total over southeastern areas, and warnings may be issued for some regions as the system moves closer.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Farmers Almanac...

...is predicting a warmer than average summer. They were right about the exceptionally cold winter we're having. I swear I will not complain, if they are right about a hot summer. Only trouble is, they also predicted above average snowfall, which hasn't materialized - yet.

Deep Freeze

I'm sitting here with two jackets on, a pair of woolen gloves and a blanket covering my legs. I'm sipping on some hot chocolate. It's freakin' cold outside and, despite having the thermostat jacked up as high as it will go, having the oven on with the door wide open, it is cold in the house.

We usually have a ten day to two week period of extreme cold every winter but it normally comes in late January or early February. I sure hope this cold spell we're having right now is just the annual deep freeze come a bit early. If we get another one in January/February I might have to set the house on fire just to keep warm. BRRRRRRRRRRRR. Or move to Florida.

Cities scrambling to deal with water main breaks

"Saskatchewan's three largest cities are hoping this year's unprecedented amount of water main breaks doesn't become the norm.

Since Jan. 1, City of Regina crews had repaired a record-setting 180 line breaks. The previous record was 163, set at the end of March 1979.

"We have no control over the weather," said John Ullrich, Regina's manager of water and sewer construction.

"A lot of times weather goes in cycles. If you look at 35 years ago, we went through a similar situation."

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were 55 running leaks throughout Regina."

"As of Tuesday, Saskatoon had 170 water main breaks since Jan. 1 with a wait time of three to six days for repairs.

Saskatoon's water lines range from brand new to nearly 100 years old."

"Workers in Prince Albert have been working 16-hour days to repair the 34 water line breaks and 70 frozen service connection lines.

Colin Innes, director of public works, said the city usually sees 15 frozen service connection lines. They're the lines that connect the building to the street water main.

"For the people who have a frozen service connection, because there are just so many of them, it's taking us a lot longer to be able to get to them," Innes said.

Some P.A. residents are waiting up to a week to have their water restored."

And, of course, it's snowing out.

How Cold Is It?

Just ask the Town of Indian Head. The town fathers and mothers have advised us to keep our cold water taps running until further notice. That's because the water lines have been freezing. Those are the underground lines, BTW. I've got mine going. Hope they give us a break on the next utility bill.

I just looked up the long term forecast for Saskatchewan for March. I wish I hadn't. Here's what's in store:

1st-3rd. Storm center over Prairies brings blizzard danger

4th-7th. Another storm brings rapid changes in temperatures, precipitation.

12th-15th. Rain, snow covers large areas of Rockies, Prairies

16th-19th. Early spring storm over Saskatchewan brings heavy snow.

24th-27th. Storm moves east from Alberta-Saskatchewan bringing snow to Manitoba, points east.

28th-31st. Mixed clouds, sun.

In some sadistic sort of way, I suppose that means "In like a lion. Out like a lamb."

And April ain't much better.  Bah. Humbug. I'm sick of winter!!

As If On Cue...

...last night, being the first day of summer and all, in the middle of the night (of course), we had our first big thunder storm, right over head. It actually scared me a bit as I was afraid lightning would strike my house.

Anywho, it's a good thing I'm a grown-up, otherwise I would have been running to find mommy and daddy and crawl into bed with them. Of course the power went off momentarily, but that's all it took to make all the electric clocks go off for a second and then start blinking interminably.

Today's forecast, which is already proving to be true:

"Snow at times heavy. Amount 10 to 15 cm. Local blowing snow early this morning and late this afternoon. Wind southeast 40 km/h gusting to 60 becoming light this morning. Wind becoming north 30 this afternoon. High minus 10. Wind chill minus 27 this morning."

That should just about do it, I think. We gotst us a record. Or at least damned close.

Would I be forgiven if I got one of those global warming freaks to shovel snow as it's coming down?

Depression

A few days ago, my niece was involved in a horrific accident. She got creamed by a semi. Miraculously, she survived, but her car was totaled. The worst she got out of it was a couple of big gashes in her scalp.

That put me in mind of another horrific accident. One that I was in when I was a mere 19 year-old. The driver of the other car was skunky drunk and was in the air and rolling. His car hit our car on the front of the drivers' side. He, and one of his passengers were killed instantly. My baby sister spent several weeks in hospital in Regina. All I got was two gashes in my head and lots of bruises. This baby sister is the mother of the niece who miraculously escaped injury a few days ago.

Emails are flying back and forth between the sisterhood and our one and only lonely brother. I was supposed to pick him up in Indian Head that night, and when I never showed he was stinking mad, until he learned what had happened.

The other thing that's depressing is the SNOW. It's still coming down!! All the kidlets in the school yard across the street from my place are in their winter duds. The damned weatherman is predicting snow almost every day for the next several days and there are predictions of big floods in the spring. (Spring? What's that?) I hope my basement doesn't flood.

Oh well. I'm getting lots done around the house. Always look on the bright side of life, and be grateful you have a life:

March came in like a lamb, but the weatherman says we have a big blizzard on the way. Dontcha just love this country. Odds are we'll get a big dump on the 31st.

Yes, I'm Still Alive!

Well, we've had our annual deep freeze. It seems to be over, please God. But now we have our annual deep snow season. Yesterday, I went downtown to pick up a few things. Got stuck in the driveway, first, though, and the forecast is for more of the white stuff today and tomorrow. But I've got lots of stuff to do around the house.

PS: I promised the other day to pick apart the Indian Industry's carefully crafted memes. I'm still working on it.
