The most incendiary and least credible of these is the assertion by the Commission’s chair, Judge Murray Sinclair, that the 150,000 children who attended these mainly Church-run schools between 1849 and 1996 were considered “sub-human,” a claim belied by their very raison-d’être: to give aboriginal children the chance to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to fully benefit from membership in the new country of Canada."
"In the fall of 1988, I was in first-year law school at the University of British Columbia. Our criminal law teacher recommended we all go downtown and watch a trial where alcohol was being considered the murder weapon for the first time. There were over 200 of us in first year criminal law. Only my mom and I attended the trial.
Although Gilbert Paul Jordan, a.k.a. "the Boozing Barber," was linked to the deaths of at least 10 women, he was convicted of manslaughter in relation to the death of only one. Evidence at his trial showed all the women he had targeted, hundreds of women, were aboriginal. Fact is, aboriginal women who were alcoholic or down on their luck ended up dead.
That was 1988. I was 28, and had just finished undergrad work, escaped a violent marriage in my early 20s and had survived a teenage rape. In 2011, some 23 years later, I ran for national chief of the Assembly of First Nations as one of eight candidates, one of four indigenous women.
I'm writing this to share my views on sexism in our community and any linkage I see to violence against women in our community and our conspicuous absence as leaders within our communities. Some 90 per cent or so of the chiefs eligible to vote for national chief are men.
In my opinion, there is a link. Aboriginal men kill aboriginal women and girls, rape aboriginal women and girls, beat aboriginal women and girls, and no one is really talking about the moose in our living room."

This needs to happen with the aboriginal people in Canada. I'm not holding my breath, though.
After WWII, when African nations became independent of Great Britain and other colonial powers, First Nations people in Canada looked longingly at events in that continent and to a large extent to that process (decolonization), which gave rise to the modern Indian movement. Just as in Africa, things went horribly wrong. Brutal dictatorships prevailed. Governments changed hands at the barrel of a tank. In a sense, the same thing happened in Canada, sans the tanks. Brutality and politically correct rhetoric took over in both places.
As this video shows, Africans are rejecting the rhetoric and brutality of the post-colonial era and the dictators who embodied it. No longer are they blaming all their problems on the boogie-man - European colonialism - and are taking responsibility for their circumstances and for their failures and are charting a new future. Some day, hopefully, a version of that will happen here.

Okay. I've been ignoring my blog again. That's because I've been following this whole Idle No More/Attawapiskat nonsense over at Sun News Network. In fact, that may be where I told ya this before, but when news that Shawn Atleo had booked some time off, on doctor's orders, my first reaction was that the Prairie Chiefs (the FSIN, especially) had got to him and we may see the end of the Assembly of First Nations. This article seems to confirm my hunches:

I gather they don't like the choice of Shawn Alteo as chief of the AFN, most likely because he has chosen a path of cooperation and conciliation. That'll never do.

"A convicted fraudster with an incredibly hefty criminal history will get a chance to take part in a sentencing circle.
Irene Marlene Peepeetch, 55, has more than 300 convictions to her name spanning nearly four decades and recently pleaded guilty to 30 more fraud-related charges that span five years and four provinces.
Regina Provincial Court Judge Linton Smith has been looking for alternative ways to deal with the career criminal since years spent behind bars seem to have done nothing to curb the woman's activities.
Earlier this week, Smith asked the Crown prosecutor and defence lawyer involved in the case to look into the possibility of a sentencing circle. Crown prosecutor Lo-reley Berra returned to court Thursday to inform Smith that Sakimay First Nation is "very excited and very willing" to host the sentencing circle. Peepeetch's family is reportedly eager to participate.
"It seems to me that somebody who's struggled, not learning from European-based justice, should try something else," Smith responded on Thursday."

After walking 3 1/2 kilometres from 5th Avenue to the Legislative Building, First Nations leaders took to the steps to a roaring crowd of 400 chanting “idle no more.”
Glenn Pelletier, a Cowessess First Nation counsellor, denounced the Harper government for not consulting First Nations on any of the changes.
While drums were beating and the smell of burning sage surrounded the crowd, Michelle Rae McKay pointed out that 89 per cent of Canadian land is owned by the crown and First Nations have a right to that land. She said the country’s aboriginals are made up of sovereign nations and Canada has “no right” to tell them what to do.
Edmund Bellegarde, tribal chairperson for File Hill Qu’Appelle tribal council, echoed that sentiment in a scrum with reporters.
“Our inherent rights to self government has to be the end result,” he said.
"Atleo earned 318 votes on the second ballot out of 535 cast Wednesday in Toronto. He was far ahead of his closest competitor — Pamela Palmater, who got 107 votes."
The best part, though, is not that it looks like he's gonna win. No, the best part is who has already dropped out:
"Following the announcement of the results, Terrance Nelson, former chief of the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation in Manitoba, withdrew from the ballot and pledged his support to Palmater. He received 25 votes in the second round."
So the loudmouth boor throws his inconsiderable support behind another loudmouth, who, even with the perhaps 25 voters who may now be going her way, is still way far behind the front runner.
And there's something to this:
""What's likely happening here is regional picks, which are very big in the AFN," CBC's Cam MacIntosh said. "The thing about the way this works is Shawn Atleo is from B.C., and B.C. has more reserves — and as a result more votes in this contest — than any other region in Canada."
Atleo's supporters had expressed confidence of having enough backing to earn victory on the second round of balloting. They came close, but a coalescing "anyone but Atleo" movement might have stymied them. MacIntosh said there is strong anti-Atleo sentiment from many of the AFN's Prairie chiefs."
I have to wonder what would happen if the rank and file on-reserve membership were allowed to vote. Prairie chiefs have been flogging an inflated, made up line about the so called numbered treaties for decades now, and it has netted the grass roots very little else but plenty of scandal, nepotism and graft. And at any given time, half the Aboriginal population on the prairies lives in cities anyway.

Yup!! This is the flipside of all that confrontation, anger and phony bravado we've been treated to for the past 30+ years.
And then there's this one:
"One of the questions posed to all candidates yesterday dealt with the problems the First Nation peoples encounter with lawyers. Reference was made to one Band that was charged $73 million relating to a land claim. That is $73 million tax dollars.
Canadian taxpayers who are so concerned about misuse of our tax dollars in relation to First Nations would do well to follow the money trail - it isn't just some Chiefs that abuse the system and it is often lawyers who are filling their pockets as fast as they can.
For every First Nation child in care in a foster home, there is a file in a lawyer's office. Only the willfully naieve (sic) would believe that the time billed on those files accurately reflects the service provided."
So I'm not the only one who has noticed there's an industry and, although nothing seems to change at the reserve level, there are lots of folks, both Indian and non-Indian who are lining their pockets, using Indian misery to fatten their wallets. It is in their interests to keep it that way.
One final point. The story at the link at the top come from the CBC. If you read through the comments, it's amazing (well, no, it's not that amazing) how many comments they have deleted. I suppose those comments weren't politically correct enough.
We all know that the European invasion of the Americas and devastation of indigenous cultures was the greatest evil ever perpetrated by man against man, right. We also know that the potential dark side of the invasion of the West by Islamists is greatly overblown. Our betters tell us so.

And after you listen to that, here's a little something to jog your memory of events that took place on or shortly after 9/11:
If you're historically challenged or brainwashed with cultural relativism, the Changing of the Guard takes place daily at Buckingham Palace, the London home of Britain's monarch.
Normally, God Save the Queen (or King, as the case may be), would be played during the Changing of the Guard, but this time they played The Star Spangled Banner. The Queen herself must have approved this breach of protocol, which in and of itself speaks volumes.
What it says is 9/11 was perceived throughout the civilized world not as an attack on America alone. It was an attack on Western Civilization, of which, Great Britain is a keystone, no less than the Great Satan, the U.S.A.
If you know anything about the Middle East, or Muslim areas of the world in general, you will know that the U.S.A has some mighty stiff competition when it comes to maintaining a high placement on the dictators club's "Most Reviled Nations" list.
The Once Great Britain is just as reviled and therefore very competitive, 'cause some (many) people in said Muslim lands just can't move on from the "blame colonialism for everything" mode even though British colonialism was dismantled - in the 1950s and '60s - a half century ago.
And it was dismantled largely via violent coups, counter-coups, and coups to counter the counter-coups, each bringing in a worse dictatorship than the one ousted, in said Muslim and other lands, commonly known as the Third World, during the Cold War. Think of it. That's two generations and a bit of people raised on thuggish dictatorship-controlled media and indoctrination.
Meanwhile, Western Civilization has reached what could well be its highest point (I hope not). Jealousy will get you reviled by the losers. Losers don't tend to be introspective. That's why they are losers. They blame others, instead of examining their own weaknesses and flaws. Kinda like the left in our own societies who are working so hard to destroy us.
And this results in guilt-trips being foisted upon the wrong people instead of the losers working to improve themselves, and that works with nations as well. Look at India, the Jewel in the Crown of the British Empire, which for a very long time after independence in 1948 or whenever it was, which chose the path of socialism for about 40 or 50 years, until they figured out that capitalism works better.
If we can survive the guilt trip being foisted upon us, we'll be okay. If not, shame on us.
