Sitting Outside...
Seven pickup trucks drove by and a goodly number of SUVs. I suppose we are doing our best to warm this place up as well. We could do without the snow, though. But it will delay the day that I have to get out there and prepare the yard and flower beds for the warmer weather that is sure to come, I hope.

Good Grief!!
Grim scenario for CBC if ads dropped, study says
"Removing advertising from the CBC would greatly lower the quality of the public broadcaster’s programming and eliminate about 3,600 jobs in independent Canadian television production, according to a new study. And besides that, what would the 5% of Canadians who watch the blessed thing do without those bathroom breaks. I mean even CBC lovers have to pee sometimes, and please don't tell me they'd expect the rest of us to pay for their time spent in the loo.
The study, commissioned by the CBC itself, also suggests that removing ads would result in a downward spiral – and increasing questions from Parliament on whether a hobbled broadcaster could fulfill its mandate and provide value for its annual $1.1-billion subsidy."
Related: And who would get paid to produce such virulent anti-American bigotry? Heavy sigh.
Norway killer Anders Behring Breivik to escape jail after declared 'insane'
"Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a bomb blast and gun rampage in Norway, is likely to escape jail after a psychiatrc evaluation concluded he had been "psychotic" at the time of the attacks."So, it's the insanity plea. I wonder how various leftards will feel about that? After all, it's not supposed to be used to let right-wing, anti-Islamist loons off the hook.
Iran protesters storm UK embassy in Tehran
It's deja vu all over again. But I guess there won't be any Canadian Caper this time, since we don't have full diplomatic relations with Iran.
Wheat Board vote means the end of the iron fist
Well, one fist anyway. We've still got the Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act to go. Once we get rid of that bit of nasty, the rest of the Liberal Party legacy dismantling process can take whatever amount of time might be necessary. With free markets and free speech restored, I'm looking forward to a brand new era for Canada. BTW, the article at the link is full of real stories lived by real Canadian prairie grain farmers illustrating the lunacy of the Wheat Board.
"The board still has its passionate defenders, to be sure. But the defenders seem stuck in an ideological time warp. Consider the reaction of board chairman Allen Oberg. “We cannot sit idly by while this government sacrifices farmers’ interests to those of giant American grain corporations.”Keep reading.
Really? That’s your best shot, anti-American, anti-corporate, Depression-era fear-mongering? It’s so outmoded, it’s almost precious, like some museum relic crafted in a superstitious time to ward off evil spirits.
It’s also straight out of Socialism 101: The freedom of the individual must be curtailed for the good of the collective. Farmers in a free country must be compelled to sell their wheat and barley through the CWB for the good of all farmers. Grain on the prairies must be pooled with the CWB so that less-efficient growers and farmers who can’t be bothered learning how to master free-market grain sales nonetheless receive the same price as their more-efficient neighbours.
But as that outdated approach to grain sales dies a much deserved death, it’s important to reflect on just how abusive the board has been in defending its monopoly over the years."
And speaking of Socialism 101, let's end with this:
Canada won't obstruct others from re-committing to Kyoto at climate talks: Kent
"Environment Minister Peter Kent said Tuesday that Canada won't stand in the way of other countries that want to continue with the Kyoto Protocol."[---]
"Kent said Canada won't make a second commitment to Kyoto because the accord doesn't include some of the world's biggest emitters, like the United States, India and China.
He reiterated the Conservative government's postion (sic) that Kyoto is the "greatest blunder that the previous Liberal government made.""

Shag an Archaeologist Day 2011
"‘Shag an Archaeologist Day 2011’ is an online project to help convince the general public to have sex with an archaeologist on July 23rd 2011. This date coincides with the Festival of British Archaeology, which runs from 16th – 31st July 2011.Also known as digging up dirt. Leave it to the Brits to come up with something like this. I wonder if just having an interest in archaeology would be enough. ;-)
Archaeologists taking part in the project will document their shag through photographs, videos and written blog posts. These will then be collected on the facebook page, which will provide a glimpse into the sex lives of people working in archaeology, from archaeological excavations to laboratories, universities, community archaeology groups, education services, museums and offices.
Remember: you don’t have to be a British archaeologist to get well and truly shagged (though it certainly helps!). ‘Shag an Archaeologist Day’ is open to everyone working or volunteering in any aspect of archaeology from anywhere in the world – and even those who used to be archaeologists but now have proper jobs."

...How about some really interesting stuff:
Big stuff.
And Little stuff.
Stuff I don't understand.
Doom and gloom stuff.
Really, really old stuff.
But, but, but - I thought there was a consensus stuff.
A different kind of ugly duckling stuff. (And to think they had banished poor old Pluto from the family a few years back.)
A few years ago, we almost went to war with Denmark over a pile of rocks in the Arctic, so why aren't we fighting over this one? This is far more interesting stuff than a pile of rocks.
And, last but not least, the big one that didn't get away.

Sorry Folks...
Giant Beer Vats to Head to Toronto
"A swath of southern Ontario will see road closures, power outages, downed cable lines and displaced traffic lights over four nights starting Friday — all in the name of beer.[---]
Massive vats that can hold six million bottles of beer will be hauled on flatbed trailers from Hamilton Harbour, where they arrived from Germany, to a Molson Coors facility near Pearson International Airport in suburban Toronto.
The empty beer vats are huge — 45 metres long, eight metres high and more than seven metres wide..."
"Challenger Motor Freight Inc. has worked with 70 different organizations in planning the route to avoid overpasses, co-ordinate with several police forces to close intersections, raise or cut hydro and cable wires to get the vats through, steer trucks by remote control through tight areas and remove metal poles and then weld them back in place."[---]
"The beer vats, which resemble jet engines, have been loaded onto six giant flatbed trailers to be hauled by transport trucks. As a Canadian, I like a good cold beer as much as the next Canuck, but sheesh! This is a bit much. All that rigmarole and no beer? And no Timmies????
They leave Hamilton on Friday night and wind their way through Burlington, Halton Region, Oakville, Milton, Peel Region, Mississauga, Brampton and York Region before ending up in Toronto on Tuesday morning.
The convoy will travel between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize disruption to local residents and businesses, Sheehan said.
The six transport trucks are part of a 40-vehicle convoy to escort the vats. It will stretch more than one-kilometre long, and will often be travelling at walking speed. During the day, the convoy will park along the side of the road.
Twenty of those vehicles will be police cruisers, though more police officers will close down roads as the convoy approaches intersections, Sheehan said.
Because of the height of the booze-bound cargo, about 1,614 service wires will be raised or otherwise manoeuvred to ready the route for the convoy, and others still will have to be cut.
Sheehan said power, phone and cable outages are expected to last about half an hour. The convoy will stop and wait until all wires are reconnected to proceed.
Utility vehicles will also make up the convoy, as will a mechanic, a welder to reattach the approximately 250 traffic lights that are expected to be moved for the trucks to get through, and a food truck.
The convoy can't exactly make a pit stop at the Tim Hortons drive-thru, Sheehan quipped."
