Medals belonging to Sask. veteran returned to family

"A car crash killed John “Jack” Austin Gibbens in 1957, but his surviving relatives caught a glimpse of the Saskatchewan man for one afternoon when a box of his war medals were returned to the family.

The Canadian military medals and patches from the Second World War stored in an old chocolate box were lost several years ago and recently found by Saskatoon resident Thom Cholowski. The medals revealed much about the man’s military service, but only small clues about their owner.

After months of exhaustive detective work leading him to Gibbens, Cholowski, a conservation manager at the Western Development Museum, returned the medals to the veteran’s family."

"Seven of Jack’s relatives, together spanning three generations, met with Cholowski at the museum, where he detailed his research efforts and what he learned about Jack, his wife Hazel and daughter Dianna — both died with Jack in the car crash — before returning the medals."

Message in a bottle from Canada arrives in Ireland after 8 years at sea

"Oisin Millea can hardly believe his luck — and instant fame he’s gained — from sorting through “rubbish” along the shoreline near his home in Ireland.

The nine-year-old schoolboy, along with his photographer mother Aoife Millea, 31, was looking at the flotsam and jetsam washed up on the shores of the tiny village of Passage East, County Waterford, last week by a particularly high tide when he discovered a two-litre green plastic pop bottle with something inside it.

It turned out to be a note, written in French, from two 12-year-old Montreal girls, Charlaine and Claudia, tossed into the Gulf of St, Lawrence in 2004 while they were vacationing in the Gaspe.

Eight years and 5,100 kilometres later, it arrived."

Previously.

As the seasons progress and I continue to engage in front-step-sitting, I continue to be amazed at what I see in front of my house. More birds. Lots more. The robins have multiplied, or at least been joined by reinforcements. There's little birds and big ones.  Chirping and singing their various songs.

The other day, I caught a little yellow one, probably a canary, flying by.  A few weeks ago there was even a raven, squawking as it flew past. You don't often see them this far south. In the distance, nearly every day, I hear an owl.  And butterflies. Beautiful ones. Including Monarch Butterflies. And lots of bugs.

Best of all, though, is the little gaffer across the street. He's probably less than two.  In any case, he's growing like a weed. A few weeks back, he made me smile when I saw him running. It's amazing how those little people propel themselves forward, 'cause when they run their feet seem to be going straight up and down. At least they'd be able to have a tantrum.

Today, his parents were filling up one of those little plastic swimming pools for him. I think I'll go over and sit in it later today, when he's not looking.

This Man Looks...

...amazingly alert and rested. I'll betcha there's no sleeping in that household though.

Three little babies.

Chances are at least one of them is awake and crying at any given moment of the night or day. My experience with babies is that, unlike their parents, they can sleep through anything and they have no idea there is this thing called day and another thing called night.

They sure are cute, though.

Diaper bills must be horrendous, too.

Good luck to you, little fellow. Exceptionally bright children often have a hard time of it in school. Hope there's a program for gifted kids where you go to school.

Mind you, in Calgary, that shouldn't be a problem.

Which reminds me. Hem. Hem. My son was exceptional, too. He learned the alphabet while we were on a holiday in Cuba and was carving the letters in the sand on the beach. One evening he noticed a flame in a lantern shaped like a W and pointed to it and said: "Hot blubbleyou." Everyone within earshot, including Mom and Dad, thought that was so cute. He was not quite two years old then - about 20 months.
