Down With Mubarak

According to Omar (of Iraq the Model), who posted this on Facebook, the words on the side of the tank mean.....Are you ready for it?.....(drumroll)....."Down with Mubarak!!"

Yes, folks. The army is on the side of the people!!

Don't mean to be pedantic but that's not a tank, it's an APC, an armored personnel carrier. They're designed to accompany tanks onto the battlefield, each with a crew of three and an 8 man infantry squad. The infantry thereby arrives safely and not tired from lengthy hiking.

That Egyptian Army vehicle photo is an older US Army model, the M-113, that's now being phased out, being replaced by Strykers and other new kit. The US has given/sold a lot of these to friendly foreign nations, including Egypt.

Maybe I should be more specific, the US has given/sold a lot of these to the regimes running some of these countries, including Egypt, as well as to democratic allies and friends.

(Which brings up the worst-case scenario, if an Islamist regime were able to take over Egypt. In that case, the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel may be endangered.

Any future war between the two would see both sides using American equipment: these M-113 APCs, M-16 rifles, M-198 heavy artillery; both the Egyptian and Israeli Air Forces fly hundreds of F-16 fighter/bombers, etc. As far as Air Forces, I'd still bet on the IAF, given equal aircraft, etc., it'd come down to tactics and general pilot skill. On that basis alone, there isn't an Air Force in the M.E. that the IAF couldn't defeat. As they've done before, with the Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian Air Forces.)

There is some positive news this morning. I'm composing a new post right now. But, this thing could turn every which way on a dime. It's way to early to predict anything. An exiled Islamist has just returned to Tunisia, to a heroes welcome, apparently. That doesn't bode well.

There's a very interesting 5 minute video of John Bolton being interviewed on Greta Van Susteren's Fox News program.

He's not so optimistic. He sees this as basically a showdown between the military regime (a clique of military men since the 1950's, with different generals in charge-Nasser, Sadat, now Mubarek) and the Islamofascists, primarily the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. That's a choice between bad and worse.

Ya, I saw that yesterday. It was a real downer. I've been reading tweets from young, hip, savvy Egyptians, who are obviously not representative of the average Egyptian, but they seem so elated and hopeful. So when I heard Bolton, I wanted to throw something at him. LOL!! Seriously, I was so disappointed, because I have a lot of respect for his opinions. He's usually correct, but I so wanted him to confirm my hopes. I hope he's wrong.
