Sweet!

In a world full of tragedy and sadness, there is good news!!

The maple syrup has been found!!! Or part of it, anyway.

"Quebec produces up to 80% of the world's maple syrup every year, and the province's syrup producers federation has managed the world's strategic reserves for the past 12 years."

"Strategic reserves"?! Hey, we're not talking oil or gold here! Well, at $8 bucks a pint for maple syrup at groceries here in Pa, maybe we are. :-(

Used to be that breakfast was the inexpensive meal of the day. Not any more. For a family of four: a pound of bacon, c. $4; a dozen large eggs c. $1.79; a box of pancake mix c. $3; a pint of maple syrup $8; half of a gallon of milk @ $3.79; half of a half gallon of orange juice @ $2. Total cost $19.69...call it $20, divided by 4 = $5 each for a traditional family breakfast.

I guess that's why, back in the day, so many families had vegetable gardens, did so much canning of fruits, vegetables, smoking meats, etc.

I recall, way back in 1970, my then husband and I went grocery shopping together shortly after our wedding. For a week's worth of groceries for two people we spent $20. (Don't ask me why I remember that detail, but I do.)

Today, 42+ years later, I easily spend $120.00 per week just for myself.

And yeah, I remember my mother working herself to the bone in a huge garden, canning what she grew, cooking and canning old chickens once they had stopped laying eggs, buying case-lots of fruit to can. Makes me exhausted just thinking about it (not to mention gives me a new appreciation for her and what she did for her ungrateful children :(. No electricity. No hot and cold running water. Only one way to stop the babies from coming and no disposable diapers, either. I'm surprised she lived as long as she did.
