Memories

Saskatonians having fun on sandbars in the South Saskatchewan River, at a spot not to be confused with Bare-Ass-Beach, which is a little further upstream. I've been there a few times - fully clothed, as was everyone else.

Damned arrogant bureaucrats! Hey, Saskatoon City Council, a huge number of the taxpaying people for whom you work, wish to use that public property for recreating. Who the hell are you to treat them like children?!

Keep the beach clean, lots of plastic trash cans, put up some porta-potties and some "Swim at Your Own Risk" signs. At that point, you've done your job, now go find some other Saskatoon business to take care of. That's what the people elected you to do and that why they pay your salaries.

Just about every year someone tries to end their life by jumping off one of the several bridges spanning the river in Saskatoon.

The river is fairly shallow, but where the channel is, it is also fairly swift, so people do get swept away.

There's also a weir over which the water flows and people have been caught in the turbulence at the bottom where the water flows over and consequently drowned.

But there's also some spectacular views of the city from atop the south-east bank, which is fairly high, not to mention some lovely architecture (stately old houses, the university campus, the Bessborough Hotel and old churches) built along its banks.

It's a very pretty city, despite it's decidedly left of centre politics. (Hey, it's a university town. What do you expect?)
