But who do they want to replace him? The Muslim Brotherhood?

Ah, this is the 64K Turkish lira question!
I'm reminded of what Henry Kissinger said of Iran and Iraq in their war in the 1980's, "It's ashamed they both can't lose."
Since the Islamofascists seem to have taken over the anti-Assad Regime resistance, we have the same Hobson's Choice.
MAybe the best, or least worst situation is a three-way stalemate: the Assad regime and it's Iranian and Russian allies controlling a sharply truncated part of Syria, the Islamist-dominated rebels holding a large part of central and eastern Syria, and a large chunk controlled by the Syrian Kurds.
Now, there's a just cause: The Syrian Kurds could unite with their Iraqi brethren and have a Republic of Kurdistan. That would terrify the Turks and Iranians who oppress their Kurds.
I think the Russians would be happy with a sea port. The Kurds certainly deserve their own country. The Islamists can rot in the middle. Considering the problems the Russians have with Islamists, it might work out well for all concerned. Slowly but surely the old Brit drawn borders are being dismantled. Nothing lasts forever.
