For The Last...
I've given up on trying to figure out what makes Canadians tick. I'm not satisfied with the beer and snow explanation, although it does go some way toward explaining our collective psyche. Nor does hockey. We're basically schizo. We imagine ourselves to be peacekeepers, or at least some of us do, yet we tolerate all sorts of violent brawls on the ice in our national sport.

I don't see a contradiction, both activities balance out nicely.
I'd rather think of Canadians as Peace Makers, who, at terrible cost in blood and treasure, participated in saving Western Civilization by defeating the Axis and liberating many conquered nations in WW2. Then in Korea, participated in the preserving of the freedom of South Korea. Then in the Cold War, participated in the defending of the freedom of Western Civilization from that other 20th century fascist scourge, Soviet Communism.
Dave, I don't think that what they have in mind. We're supposed to the UN Peacekeepers working in areas of the world where there is no peace to keep.
Any mention of actual participation in an all out war, is verboten.
