Ever read about the Tunguska Blast? A 1908 asteroid or comet or meteor (scientists still disagree on that question) impact in remote Siberia that flattened an forest area of approx. 50 km. diameter. Subsequent estimations of the Tunguska impact object make it far smaller than the asteroid that just paid us a visit.
There's a chart of similar events in the linked article. Note there have been several significant impacts in Canada, just in the 20th century.
At some point, there's going to have to be a serious global effort to build a space-based deflection system, ready to go. It'll probably take a group of missiles with large nuclear warheads to make it feasible.

I would have thought there was already a space-based deflection system. That's kinda scary that there isn't.
