Aaaannndddd, Here's Quebec!!

Sovereignty losing appeal for young Quebecers

Darn it. I so wanted to kick their asses on their way out. But, you know politics. The winds can shift in an instance. In any case, we Canucks are living in interesting times.

I've read a number of Mark Steyn's essays in which he says that the Quebec secession thing is really a shakedown racket on the ROC.

Maybe there's a growing unspoken understanding that a sovereign Quebec would have to pay it's own unsustainable bills and that the pipeline to the Canadian Treasury would be removed.

Seems to me that without the ROC, a sovereign Quebec would financially be another Greece, or Spain. And we see what's happening in Greece now.

Many years ago a Liberal MP/Senator whose name I have forgotten started a Youth Exchange program called Katimivik (Inuit word), in which groups of youth from Quebec and other groups of youth from the ROC visited each others provinces for a four month stint and did community volunteer work while there. The youth were billetted in private homes, so they would have been surrounded by the "other" language.

I think it's still going. It was a good program. The idea was to get both "solitudes" talking to one another and learning about one another.

This may have something to do with it, too. The program has been in existence since Trudeau was PM, so by now there will have been several thousands of young people, now much older, that were able to argue in an intact Canada's favour.

It could also be an unexpected outcome of official bilingualism, where many Quebecois got jobs in the civil service far away from Quebec and actually learned something about the ROC.

In any case, there have been many opportunities for young Quebecers to learn about that sort of thing, so maybe that's why they don't want to risk falling for the separatist ruse.

Falling for the NDP ruse, now that's a different story. Young people everywhere are still all too willing to swallow that guff undigested.
