Whoopie!!

Canada's court system makes a logical ruling!!!

Remember the immigrant Chinese grocer who was charged with forceable confinement, and whatnot, for tying up a thief/shoplifter and waiting for the police. He's been found not guilty!! I guess judges can put their fingers in the air and see which way the wind is blowing, too.

But there's still more to do:
"(Defense lawyer) Lindsay told the court that Bennett (the thief) has had 43 findings of guilty and the longest term he has been sentenced to has been 90 days."
Anyone wondering about the real reason Stockwell Day is building more prisons?

While the shopkeeper and his assistants may have pushed the boundaries of citizen's arrest, and allegedly fell afoul of the law themselves, they got a golden opportunity to highlight the uneven character of police protection in this country. The discriminatory way the police handle some complaints contributes very strongly to the distrust immigrant groups have of the justice system. A more even-handed approach to crime would inspire community trust, and would stand law enforcement in good stead when the issues are more serious than shoplifting; e.g. human trafficking, drug dealing, extortion, etc.
