"Israeli jets have bombed a Hamas target in the Gaza Strip, the Islamist group said.

There were no casualties from the attack, which came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised a "disproportionate" response to rocket and mortar fire from Gaza.

Witnesses said a missile struck after dark in a cluster of caravans that served as a Hamas security headquarters in Mughraqa, a village at the centre of the coastal enclave.

They said the site had been evacuated, apparently after Israel telephoned warnings to Palestinians in Gaza to leave any buildings where weapons were located.

The attack came after three Israelis were wounded by mortars fired from Gaza, wounding two soldiers and the first Israeli civilian hurt since a truce on January 18 ended Israel's 22-day offensive in the Hamas-run coastal enclave.

Two rockets struck southern Israel earlier on Sunday, causing no damage or casualties.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a group belonging to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for that attack. No group made an immediate claim for the mortar shootings.

Mr Olmert said: 'The government's position was from the outset that if there is shooting at the residents of the south, there will be a harsh Israeli response that will be disproportionate.'"
