Louise: I think that a bellweather of advancement in the area of human rights is the freedom to practice religion, the freedom to raise one's children in the religion of one's choice, AND the freedom to convert from one religion to another. Well, over the past 60 years the people of the the State formerly known as the USSR certainly have a great deal more religious freedom than they once had. However, it would appear to me that those states of an Islamic constitution have probably not progressed much, if at all. And Islam will never be a real player in the cultural challenges of the present era until it not only relaxes its persecution, but actively supports the religious libertarian impulses of its citizenry.
