# 3 is bad news and I'm not sure about #2. Seems it leaves more questions unanswered than asked. Certainly, once it's built, there will be no more, or at least significantly reduced, greenhouse gas emissions, or risks of oil spills, since trucking and transporting that oil by rail will be superceded.

Moose Sex Project gets big land donation to promote cross-border moose relations
"The Nature Conservancy of Canada has received 316 hectares of private land from a former top diplomat to promote cross-border moose love along the Nova Scotia-New Brunswick boundary.

The land conservation organization has been attempting to assemble a corridor of land on the Chignecto Isthmus between the two provinces as part of its so-called Moose Sex Project."
(Love the caption under the picture.)

I didn't know moose respected borders, even during rutting season. Lazy bastards.

And this comment is hilarious: "Phase Two is to outfit the Nova Scotia moose with fishnet stockings and earrings."

"John Paul Cragg, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says the average for June is around 60 millimeters of rain.

So far, he says, the Saskatoon region has received around 85 millimeters.

“It looks like we could easily get another 15-20 mm by the time this weekend is done,” he said. “So we’ll be looking at well over 100 mm of rain…”

Some areas are even wetter. A region north of Prince Albert received more rain last weekend that it usually gets in a month."
Looking on the bright side, I can avoid the weeding for a while.

If They Were Proroguing Parliament...

...the left would howl and scream. This time, however, the senate is promising to sit longer, into July, but I'll bet you the left will still howl and scream.

Conservative senators ready to sit into July to clear backlog

Here's why.
"Conservatives in the Senate say they are willing to sit into July — past June 28 when the upper chamber is scheduled to start its break — to pass five government bills, and possibly two contentious bills from backbench Tory MPs.

It isn’t unusual for the Senate to sit longer than the House of Commons to clear the legislative backlog left when MPs take their breaks. This year, however, the Senate may sit into July to pass two private member’s bills: One about union finances (bill C-377) and the other about hate speech (bill C-304)."
Get 'er done folks. We've been waiting a long time for both, but especially for the hate speech amendment.

Come inside and the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, push 3rd Floor. When you get out, I'm on the left. With your elbow, hit my doorbell. OK?"

"Grandma, that sounds easy, but, why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow? .........

An attractive blonde from Cork , Ireland , arrived at the casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars in a single roll of the dice.

She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude." with that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, "Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"
As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. "Yes! Yes! I won, I won!" She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed.

The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded.

Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching."

All UN treaties require nations to surrender some aspect of their national sovereignty.

There is clearly a backlash against the global warming hoax, particularly from nations that have discovered the costs to their economies that idiotic "renewable" energy schemes and emissions reductions incur. In the real world, they are experiencing longer, harsher winters as the result of the cooling cycle the Earth has been in for the last seventeen years!

Despite President Obama's incessant claims that the Earth is heating, scientists in both Russia and China have been publishing data from scientific studies disputing the Big Lie of global warming/climate change."

Egypt's renouncement of ties with Assad accords with Western polices
"The recent decision of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to cut diplomatic ties with Syria is "harmonious" with the Western policies against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, especially that it comes after the United States approved providing arms for the Syrian opposition, analysts said."
[---]
""This is a step that conforms with the recent U.S. escalation to arm the Syrian rebels against Assad's administration and conforms with its deliberation over imposing a no-fly zone on Syria," Gamal Salama, head of political science department at Suez University, told Xinhua."
[---]
"Morsi also urged Arab and Islamic countries to have an emergency summit on the latest developments in the Syria conflict.

"This summit is meant to provide an Arab cover for any Western escalation against Assad's administration," the political expert said, citing Western attacks on the former governments of Iraq and Libya as examples.

With regards to Morsi's warning to Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah against involvement in the Syria conflict, Salama said that it was meant to please Islamists, particularly the Salafists. (Emphasis mine)

"Morsi needs their support as an intended massive anti-president protests will be held on June 30," (Ed: I presume this means in Egypt) he said, adding that the protests will be held by activists and the opposition who call for an ousting of Morsi and an early presidential election."

Liberals express anger towards Saskatchewan premier’s comments
"The federal Liberals are expressing anger at Saskatchewan’s premier over comments he’s made against their leader.

Brad Wall has called on Justin Trudeau to return the 20-thousand dollars he was paid for speaking at a literacy conference in Saskatoon.

Wall says it’s inappropriate for an elected official to accept a speaking fee for such an event.

He says last year’s conference was left with a mere seven-thousand dollar surplus for its next event.

The issue came to light after Wall was asked about speaking fees in an interview with Global T-V and he questioned whether the money was used to help finance Trudeau’s leadership campaign.

Liberal M-P Dominic LeBlanc called that suggestion a smear and is demanding Wall apologize.

But the premier says he has no intention of apologizing.

Wall’s comments came amid media reports that Trudeau has refused a request to give back a speaking fee to a New Brunswick charity that was trying to raise funds for a seniors home.

The charity says the fundraising event turned out to be a money loser."

A Big Blow...

...to the Indian Industry:

Aboriginal Affairs minister defends government’s aboriginal policies
"Months after the Idle No More movement spawned commitments to discuss treaty implementation and comprehensive claims, some groups have been dismayed with the federal government’s plans to cut project funding to aboriginal organizations.

But Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt says the move won’t affect essential services in First Nations communities, and that the groups should seek other sources of funding.

“Some groups, they have this sense of entitlement because year after year after year, project money was coming,” Valcourt told Postmedia News. “I think that Canadians would agree that if your advocacy group wants to advocate for certain things, that their supporters should fund them to an extent.”"
[---]
"Valcourt made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with Postmedia News – one of his first since becoming minister in February – in which he defended the government’s aboriginal policies, including how it consults with First Nations, its plans for education on reserves and how it’s handling the issue of violence against indigenous women.

A June 3 letter from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to 43 aboriginal organizations outlines changes to the way their projects will be funded,..."
[---]
"Valcourt said the changes won’t affect areas such as housing, infrastructure and social services, and would leave funds to focus on “shared priorities” such as economic development.

“I don’t equate progress with funding for advocacy groups or national organizations or regional organizations..."
[---]
"Atleo has called for “transformative change” in the government’s treatment of First Nations. The Harper government approach, by contrast, has been to chip away at the Indian Act bit by bit; Valcourt cites the First Nations Land Management Regime, which he says gives those who opt in more control over their own land."
[---]
"Conservative legislative efforts, Valcourt said, “are all consistent with this incremental approach helping First Nations get out of the Indian Act,” he said. “We will not get rid of this Indian Act overnight, this is impossible. We’re going to go incrementally.”"
Whatever will the Industry whine about if this is successful?

More On One Of Our Scandals-du-Jour

The media vs. Rob Ford: Barbara Amiel explains why the war is over the top
"A quick reprise. There is said to be a tape showing Mayor Ford smoking crack cocaine. Who cares, would be my response, but that’s idiosyncratic. Still, the actual tape has never appeared. Posses of journalists are asking the mayor if he is a crack cocaine addict. Every crack cocaine addict I have ever seen is a bundle of skin and bone. Mayor Ford could be their poster boy: Smoke crack and not lose an ounce."
[---]
"In summary. The elder brother of Rob Ford is alleged to have sold hash, a soft drug that both the Globe and the Star have suggested should not be criminalized—except perhaps when it involves the Ford family. There is zero evidence for these allegations. So what is the crime—dealing in soft drugs or being a member of the Ford family? This story has been 18 months in the making. The reporters worked hard but came up with nothing. Not their fault; it happens. You don’t publish. Was all that consulting and agonizing described by the Globe in a note with the story simply its editors wrestling with the morality of making accusations with no evidence? Do they think the absence of evidence is evidence? This is about as bad as journalism gets.

By the 1980s, psychiatrists at Ontario’s Addiction Research Foundation had backed the idea that people should inform themselves about the consequences of drug use and make their own decisions. Even earlier, we had the LeDain royal commission on drugs recommending decriminalization. If every word about Doug Ford and family were true, what we have is a 26-year-old story of a couple of kids who were selling soft drugs at a time when controversy over usage was declining."
[---]
"One can only imagine the hysteria and accusations if this were done to a protected icon of the progressives: if newspapers or TV aired “alleged” nasties about the family of David Suzuki or Stephen Lewis. They would rightly be told where to get off. Right now and here."
Yup. I've already said (on SNN's webpage comments, I think) that when all is said and done, it will be journalism that is lying dead on the floor. Suicide, apparently.

The Assault Continues

Why the CBC has outlived its usefulness
"The frozen North is on a near-enough-equal footing with downtown Toronto when it comes to digital access, and children are no longer plunked down thoughtlessly in front of a cathode-ray tube for hours at a stretch. In this environment, the CBC is not proving to be much good at specifying exactly why it is needed."
[---]
"In this environment, the CBC is not proving to be much good at specifying exactly why it is needed.

That helps to explain the brief furor last week over the corporation’s decision to drop a handful of ads purchased on the English-language TV network for Postmedia’s newly paywalled digital properties. A CBC employee raised a stink about “advertising for assets that we compete with”—“we” in this case referring to the CBC’s website. The brass agreed that the CBC is now officially a “competitor” with newspapers, at least insofar as they have websites.

The gesture looks for all the world like a gratuitous, specific cheap shot at Postmedia, whose various owners in recent times have all shared a passionate devotion to trashing the corp. As Postmedia and other newspaper empires pull paywalls down over their digital incarnations, CBC minions on Twitter have been caught crowing about their “no paywall” status, purchased by the taxpayer at the sensational bargain price of $1.2 billion a year."
[---]
"It may be hard for readers to feel bad for the cartelizing Paywall Gang, but it is surely a tactical error for the CBC to call attention to its incredibly expensive “free” nature. The Broadcasting Act says the Corporation shall operate “radio and television” services; it doesn’t say anything about a website, much less a website that functions as a telegraphic gazette. Of course, times change and new media paradigms develop and blah blah blah, but the distinction here is crucial: The original pretext for the creation of the CBC was the limited, theoretically public nature of broadcast spectrum. To the degree that the CBC is now just one digital content provider among many, with a hypothesized mandate that puts it in a position to compete with newspapers, it can rightly be privatized, or destroyed, or handed over to its own employees, in order to unburden the public treasury.

Polls always demonstrate high levels of purported political support for the CBC. The public subsidy to the CBC is a forced transfer of wealth from people who don’t like it to people who do, and the “dos,” unsurprisingly, like the set-up just fine. In the U.S., donor-funded, non-profit “public” radio is equally adored by fans; the only difference is that they’re asked to chip in for their preferred electronic smarm or go without. No social or economic arguments against privatization of the CBC are possible. It’s nothing but a zombie, slowly sucking up a dwindling fund of goodwill and nostalgia. Mr. Dressup is dead, folks."
Ladies and gentlemen, I think it's only a matter of time.

Turkey is currently governed by an Islamist regime. Is there hope yet?

I don't think the Arab Spring is over, by a long shot

I keep harping about the Prague Spring and how many years it took before communist Czechoslovakia fell.

Remember the old saying: "Be the change you want to see"? I don't think Muslim countries' citizens will tolerate Islamist governments any more than the Arab world tolerated Arab Nationalist regimes, which is what prompted the Arab Spring in the first place.

If Turkey is going to lead the way, that is kind of interesting. Turkey's history is one of alternating orientations toward Europe and toward the Muslim world. Under Erdogan, Turkey has turned away from Europe. Will they soon be swinging back the other way?

D-Day:
"In a statement from Ottawa, Prime Minister Stephen Harper called on Canadians to pause to recall and honour the noble sacrifices of the heroes who turned the tide of the war on June 6, 1944.

"By the evening of June 6, 1944, Canadian troops had progressed further inland than any of their Allies — a proud and remarkable accomplishment," Harper said.

"The day took a heavy toll. To secure victory on D-Day, 340 Canadians gave their lives, 574 were wounded and 47 taken prisoner," he said."

Basically everybody who has lived in Canada their whole lives has access to some kind of cottage near a lake, which is essentially a small, shitty house with maybe one working bathroom and lots of spiders."

You Can't Make...

Vancouver police asked to explain huge disparity in ticketing between wealthy, impoverished neighbourhoods
"The VPD handed out 2,050 jaywalking tickets in the Downtown Eastside over the last four years, according to statistics obtained through a Freedom of Information request and released Thursday by two advocacy groups.

But no tickets were issued over the same period in the more tony neighbourhoods of Dunbar/Southlands or Kerrisdale.

The two groups that filed the FOI — Pivot Legal Society and the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users — are demanding police explain the reason for the disparity."
I can think of several reasons, the most significant being that the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver is probably crawling with cops, given the activity that normally goes on there, whereas the other areas mentioned would not be crawling with cops, given the lack of such activity in those regions. And "The Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users"????? (Shakes head.)

In any case, there's plenty of leftie logic on display here:
"“We believe these statistics confirm our fears that city bylaws are not being enforced for reasons of public safety, but to circumvent the constitutional protections in this country against profiling and arbitrary detention,” said Pivot lawyer Douglas King, in a statement.

The people of this neighbourhood have continually asked for greater pedestrian safety, not increased police enforcement. Giving out 2,000 tickets to people who cannot pay fines in an effort to find the occasional outstanding warrant while ignoring enforcement entirely in richer neighbourhoods is simply unacceptable.”"

Listen sweethearts. Get your aims straight. Going topless, especially in an Arab country, is basically a protest against common sense. It's an admission that you have none. A topless protest has nothing to do with "Ms Tyler" and won't help her. It has everything to do with your own self-centredness.

He looks like he has a bad case of gingivitis.

I don't believe I ever saw the movie Jaws. I never understood the logic of laying down good money to scare yourself to death. And besides, any movie that relies on special effects, normally doesn't have a plot or good acting, or anything else worth paying to see. Just my ever so humble opinion.

Erdogan faces growing criticism

There's more to this than just a few stupid trees:
"Calls for the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan are growing louder as the violent clashes between police and demonstrators escalate."
[---]
"The protests have continued over the past few days. Erdogan has called the protestors "looters" who are being led by extremist groups.

Journalist Aktar disagrees. "It is a young, impartial and urban movement without a political agenda and without a leader," he said. Although the traditional left-wing groups are participating, they are not the driving force, he added, referring to the numerous socialist, communist and Kurdish flags that protestors have been waving for days. "No political movement or party would be capable of manipulating people at Taksim Square or in Gezi Park," he said."
[---]
"Özcan also views the citizen gatherings as a "highly diversified demonstration." All types of groups are participating in the protests, even radical ones, he notes. "But the backbone is formed by young people who have taken to the streets to protect their rights," he said. "Teenagers, school children and university students form the core of these demonstrations." [Emphasis mine]
And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is why I have hope for the Middle East. The dictators who are being/have been toppled were old generation types, no doubt weened on Arab Nationalism and anti-colonialism. The new crop are after something else, something that is, or at least used to be, found in Western Civilization, and a few other places, commonly known as the Rights of Man. Maybe the Turks will lead the way.

Oh Brother!!!

Now our most famous ambulance chaser is coming after all of us:

Regina lawyer Tony Merchant sues CBC for libel

It just doesn't get any worse: Ambulance chaser plus a taxpayer funded broadcaster. But perhaps there's a silver lining in all this. If this doesn't prompt the jokers in Ottawa to privatize the beast, I don't know what will. And God knows, Harper must to hoping for something that can boost his ratings

...of my British heritage:

The 17 Best Ways To Annoy A British Person

Except I do have a concept of baked beans and, of course, the water has to be boiled properly to make tea, and the best way is to pass the tea bag over the steam, never mind letting it steep for hours on end. I don't own a "rooty-tooty point and shooty". I like blueberry pancakes, but "clamy rogers"? What's up with that? And here in Canuckistan, the real and proper name for chips is French fries, not fries, although "fries" will do in a pinch, and we'll take them with either vinegar or ketchup, thank you. In other matters, it's a toss-up between the Brit way and the Yank way.

These Two Again

Bradley Manning court-martial opens
"He faces 22 charges, including a count of aiding the enemy, which could send him to prison for life without parole. He is also charged with violating the Espionage Act, a 1917 law created to try spies and traitors, which carries severe penalties."
Compare that charge to the one levied against our "child soldier" Kahdr.

And, as for Manning's hero, Assange?

"A Wikileaks spokesperson has said that the organization’s founder Julian Assange has become everything he ‘originally, rightly, despised."

Virginity Under Assault

Prince Harry: Maniac who plotted to kill royal was radicalised in jail after he converted to Islam
"Fanatical Ashraf Islam promised Muslims they would be rewarded with a string of virgins if they launched mass murder in Britain.

The 30-year-old serial fraudster – who plotted to kill Prince Harry – is said to have launched a vile tirade of hate against Christians in an online manifesto.

Islam, known as Mark Townley before he became a Muslim, called the virgins of “tender age” “houris” in his crazed February rant.

He said: “Those who kill Christians would be given a good number of these houris to enjoy.

“The Prophet had also ordered his followers not to befriend Christians or talk with them.”

His outburst was written under the headline “Kill Christians”."
You gotta hand it to the Mirror. They're not afraid to call this fascist ideology what it is. They and SNN. I wish there were others like them.

Trouble In Islami The Middle East

Turkey police clash with Istanbul Gezi Park protesters

Hmmmmm. Something's not quite believable about this.
"At least 12 people have been injured after Turkish police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters occupying a park in central Istanbul.

Demonstrators had held a four-day sit-in at Gezi Park, angry at plans to redevelop that part of Taksim Square.

An Istanbul court later ordered the temporary suspension of the project to uproot trees in the park."
Do people and police forces really go to these lengths over a few stupid trees? Or is this like the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back?

Iran presidential debate on economy dissolves into chaos
"Iran's first debate between candidates for the presidency degenerated into acrimony live on state television on Friday when, instead of discussing the economy, some of the hopefuls resorted to sniping over the questions and format.

The testy exchange between the moderator and reformist Mohammad Reza Aref, moderate Hassan Rohani, and conservative Mohsen Rezaie was the subject of wide ridicule by Iranian viewers who had tuned in for the four-hour disussion.

They were among eight candidates for the June 14 vote presenting their ideas on an economy buffeted by international sanctions over Iran's disputed nuclear programme, rising unemployment, and inflation running at over 30 percent, according to official figures.

The series of three debates are central to trying to build public interest in the presidential vote, the first since 2009, which unleashed months of protests by those who said Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's win was fraudulent, demonstrations that were eventually crushed by security forces."
[---]
"One question was: If you want to select an official for your administration, what is their most important quality? Candidates could choose between a lack of corruption, experience, expertise or prudence.

They were also presented with pictures, such as an agricultural scene, a market, or a cargo ship, and asked to say whatever came to mind."
[---]
"The three, seated with their colleagues in a line of desks in front of a backdrop of flowers and rolling woodland, said the format was farcical and did not allow them to present their plans to the country or engage in dialogue with each other.

Several times they simply refused to answer the question.

"In honour of the dear people of my country I will sit here, but I will answer none of your test questions," said Aref, gesticulating with his pen towards the moderator standing in front of an image of Khamenei.

"I am a patient person and I can tolerate a lot," added Rezaie. "With these repetitive, discontinuous, short, one-to-three minute answers, the people are being harmed and the eight people up here are being insulted."

Rohani, the most prominent moderate candidate in an election dominated by hardliners, said: "People will see this style of debate as insulting."

Nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili; foreign policy adviser to Khamenei Ali Akbar Velayati and Tehran mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf are considered the frontrunners and mostly kept quiet.

The slate of candidates, vetted last week by Iran's Guardian Council, is dominated by conservatives and hardliners seen as close to Khamenei. The council banned two independent contenders, moderate former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad ally Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie."
Perhaps the moderator was simply afraid to ask tough questions. I'm sure the Republican Guard was watching. They'll probably come after him anyway, for "insulting" their hand-picked candidates.
